Proposed Rules Aim to Increase Organ Donation

On December 17, 2019, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) took steps to increase the availability of organs for Americans on waitlists for organ transplants. In response to the Executive Order on Advancing American Kidney Health, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a proposed rule to change the way organ procurement organizations are held accountable for their performance, and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) issued a proposed rule to remove financial barriers to living organ donation.

Comments on the proposed rules are due by February 18, 2020 (for the HRSA rule) and February 21, 2020 (for the CMS rule).
